Licenses and certifications explained
The licenses and certifications that matter for flooring installers, in plain English.
State or city contractor license
Legally requiredMost states license or register remodelers, and some leave it to cities. Where a license is required, working without one is illegal and usually voids your recourse. Check the number on the licensing board's own lookup.
National Wood Flooring Association certified
Installer and sand-and-finish certifications for hardwood. Worth asking about for site-finished floors, where the installer's skill is most of the result.
BBB Accredited Business
Accreditation means the firm agreed to BBB standards and pays a fee. The useful part is the complaint history, which you can read whether or not a firm is accredited.
Flooring installers: common questions
Solid or engineered hardwood?
Engineered is more stable over concrete, in basements and with radiant heat, and can be floated. Solid can be refinished more times over its life. In a dry, above-grade room either works.
