Licenses and certifications explained
The licenses and certifications that matter for deck builders, in plain English.
State or city contractor license
Legally requiredMost states license or register remodelers, and some leave it to cities. Where a license is required, working without one is illegal and usually voids your recourse. Check the number on the licensing board's own lookup.
North American Deck and Railing Association
The deck trade body. Its training covers ledger attachment and railing loads, which is where most deck failures start.
BBB Accredited Business
Accreditation means the firm agreed to BBB standards and pays a fee. The useful part is the complaint history, which you can read whether or not a firm is accredited.
Deck builders: common questions
Composite or wood?
Composite costs more up front and needs no staining, and most carry 25-year or longer warranties. Pressure-treated wood is cheaper and repairable but needs sealing every couple of years. The framing underneath is wood either way.
